In Europe, some of the highest teenage pregnancy rates have been reported in the Lambeth and Southwark boroughs of South London. This is why a recent study was done in five pharmacies in these areas. This study targeted women who are between the age of 20 and 24 and who are of a Caribbean, African and black British background. These women reported that the fact that they were given over-the-counter access to the pill has decreased their need for emergency contraception.

These women reported that they valued the anonymity and convenience offered by having over the counter access to the pill. This is why a recent NHS report suggested that the contraceptive such as Evra contraceptive patch could be offered to girls who are as young as 13 years old at pharmacies without the need of a prescription. This suggestion was done based on the fact that it was found that the number of women who needed emergency contraception decreased significantly after women were given over-the-counter access to the pill.

It is being recommended that pharmacies around the country offer over the counter access to the pill without the need of a prescription especially to teenagers between the age of 13 and 16. However, many do not approve of this recommendation and showed their opposition when teenage girls who are as young as 13 years were allowed access to the pill in 2010 on the Isle of Wight.
